From Abubakar Sadiq Mohd Zaria

Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria has sought for stronger Ecosystem restoration while reaffirming the university's commitment to environmental sustainability.

Prof. Adamu Ahmed, Vice-Chancellor the University, stated this at the 2026 World Environment Day and Tree Planting event held the university's main campus in Zaria.

The event with the theme, "Inspired by Nature: Restoring ABU's Ecosystem for Resilience, Adaptation and Sustainable Microclimate," reflected the university's determination to preserve and enhance its natural environment.

Represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration), Prof. Bello Sabo, the VC noted that successive administrations of the university had sustained ABU's reputation for maintaining a serene and beautiful campus environment, attributing the achievement to the commitment of past Vice-Chancellors.

Prof Adamu also thanked participants and guests for honouring the event and wished them safe journeys back to their destinations.

In his remarks, Chairman of the occasion, Prof. Aminu Ladan Sharehu.while appreciating the university's management said it has sustained the annual environmental initiative, describing it as a worthy tradition that promotes environmental consciousness.

Prof. Sharehu, who also chairs the Kaduna State Local Government Service Board, urged stakeholders to continue supporting efforts aimed at protecting the environment.

Delivering the keynote address, Chairman of the Nigerian Institution of Surveyors, Surv. Maikano Samson, said rapid urbanisation across the world posed both opportunities and environmental challenges.

He projected that about 68 per cent of the world's population would live in urban areas by 2050, with Africa expected to witness one of the fastest rates of urban growth.

According to him, Nigeria is already experiencing the trend, as cities such as Lagos, Abuja, Kano and Port Harcourt continue to expand rapidly.

Samson said while well-planned urbanisation drives economic growth, innovation and improved access to essential services, poorly managed expansion exerts significant pressure on land, infrastructure and natural ecosystems.

The symposium attracted participants and environmental stakeholders from within Kaduna State and beyond.
