Zazzau Emir’s Defamation Case: Court Bars Claimant Over Non-Compliance, Adjourns Proceedings

Image
The Kaduna State High Court sitting in Dogarawa, Zaria, has delivered a significant ruling in the ongoing defamation suit involving the Emir of Zazzau, Ahmed Nuhu Bamalli, and a former Wazirin Zazzau, Alhaji Ibrahim Muhammad Aminu, barring the claimant from being heard due to non-compliance with a court order. At the resumed sitting on Wednesday, the presiding judge, Justice Yakubu Badamasi, held that the claimant could not be granted the right of audience, having failed to comply with an earlier directive of the court. The court had previously imposed a fine of ₦200,000 on the claimant for lack of diligent prosecution, citing the inconvenience caused to defence counsel who travelled from Lagos, Abuja, and Kaduna. Despite the order, the claimant failed to settle the fine, prompting the court to invoke the legal principle that a party in disobedience of a subsisting court order cannot be heard until such contempt is purged. Consequently, the court adjourned the matter to Jun...

Nigeria’s AI boom faces governance gaps, experts warn

Image

The Academic Seal: A Moral Critique of Political Endorsement

Image
There is a reason why the PhD is titled "Doctor of Philosophy." Philosophy is a discipline of rigor and gravity. Among its many virtues, it is meant to compel one to think, act, and write with the clarity of a philosopher. But what does it take to truly embody that pattern? It requires a commitment to intellectual integrity that borders on the sacred. Regardless of which philosophical school one leans toward, the minimum expectation is that objectivity, rationality, and a commitment to truth be adequately reflected in one's public discourse. This premise is prompted by an article written by one Professor Shehu A. Goni, which serves as an overt promotion of Mr. Bala Wunti for the governorship of Bauchi State. Every citizen, professor or not, has the right to support any candidate. However, I wish the author had simply signed his name without appending his professorship. Had he done so, no serious observer would have felt the need to respond; it would have been ...
