Badaru Says Nigeria Making Steady Progress in Tackling Insecurity
The Minister of Defence, Muhammad Badaru Abubakar, has said that Nigeria is making significant progress in addressing insecurity under the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, attributing the improvement to new security strategies and renewed collaboration between the government and communities.
Speaking at the 18th Annual General Assembly (AGA) and Homecoming Events of the Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) Alumni Association held at the university’s main campus in Samaru, Zaria, Badaru said the government has introduced sustainable measures aimed at ensuring long-term peace and stability across the country.
He stated that empowering young people and tackling poverty remain central to the government’s broader security strategy.
> “Security is not the government’s responsibility alone. Communities must also play active roles in ensuring peace and stability,” the Minister said.
Badaru, who chaired the Pre-AGA Lecture, commended Ahmadu Bello University for its consistent contributions to education, leadership, and national development. He described the institution as one of Nigeria’s foremost centres of learning that continues to shape the country’s human capital and policy direction.
Delivering the Pre-AGA Lecture titled “The Role of Alumni in Promoting National Unity and Development,” former Plateau State Governor and Senator, Simon Bako Lalong, emphasized the crucial role of alumni associations in fostering unity, peace, and sustainable development in Nigeria.
He said alumni networks across higher institutions serve as bridges that connect people of diverse ethnic, cultural, and professional backgrounds, thereby promoting dialogue, understanding, and collaboration.
Lalong added that education — particularly in institutions like Ahmadu Bello University remains a strong unifying force in Nigeria’s diversity. He urged graduates to go beyond their academic achievements and contribute meaningfully to the country’s development.
> “Our alumni communities cut across ethnic, cultural, and professional lines. Through them, we can bridge divides, foster dialogue, and advance national unity,” he said.
He called on the government, educational institutions, and alumni bodies to build stronger partnerships that address the nation’s challenges, including insecurity, unemployment, and poverty.
The Emir of Zazzau, Ambassador Ahmad Nuhu Bamalli, commended Ahmadu Bello University for its legacy of academic excellence and its role in promoting national cohesion.
> “Ahmadu Bello University remains one of Nigeria’s strongest institutions of integration. Its alumni continue to contribute significantly to national development,” the Emir said.
He prayed for lasting peace, unity, and progress in both the university and the nation at large.
In his remarks, the President of the ABU Alumni Association Worldwide, Malam Adamu Mamman Kontagora, expressed gratitude to the dignitaries and participants, pledging continued support for the university’s vision and national development agenda.
He said the association will intensify its efforts toward mentorship, youth empowerment, and academic advancement, while sustaining collaboration with ABU in research and innovation.
> “Our alumni network will continue to partner with ABU in fostering research, innovation, and leadership growth,” he said.
